It’s my birthday today! And since it’s the 20th, why not talk about the 2020 releases that I’m treating myself to as a birthday gift? I love a good number pattern, I wish there were 20 books but I only have eight…
A Longer Fall by Charlaine Harris
Internationally bestselling Charlaine Harris is at her best here, building a compelling world of this alternate history of the United States, where magic is an acknowledged but despised power.
I didn’t really enjoy the first book in this series when I read it but I love Charlaine Harris’s writing style and honestly, I can’t stop thinking about An Easy Death so maybe A Longer Fall will surprise me!
Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica
It all happened so quickly. First, animals became infected with the virus and their meat became poisonous. Then, governments initiated the Transition. Now, ‘special meat’ – human meat – is legal.
One of my most common arguments I have with a friend of mine is whether or not human meat, given freely in the zombie apocalypse, would be vegan. So, even though it doesn’t sound like this meat is being given voluntarily, I’m really looking forward to this. I wonder what happened to all the plant-protein like lentils and beans…6th February
A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers
A young witch is cursed to relive a doomed love affair through many lifetimes, as both troubled muse and frustrated artist, in this haunting debut novel.
Witches have been my jam for a while now and this one is a time-travel romance set in 19th Century France, 30’s Hollywood, 70’s LA and present-day Washington! I’ve never found a time-travel novel that’s worked for me but I have high hopes for this one.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
An era-defining novel about the relationship between a fifteen-year-old girl and her teacher.
All he did was fall in love with me and the world turned him into a monster.
I don’t tend to read many issue books as I can find them a bit stressful, but I found Lolita
by Vladamir Nabokov fascinating, and this is dealing with a similar topic from the victim’s perspective. I think it’s a must-read debut.
Six Tudor Queens: Katheryn Howard, The Tainted Queen by Alison Weir
Acclaimed, bestselling historian Alison Weir draws on extensive research to recount one of the most tragic tales in English history – that of a lively, sweet but neglected girl, used by powerful men for their own gain.
I’ve been reading this series since 2016
and although I have a proof, I’m definitely going to buy the hardcover. I have for the past four books and I’m really enjoying this so far! Look for a review in the future.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will revisit the world of Panem sixty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games.
Way back when I first started talking about books on this blog, I read The Hunger Games trilogy, and boy, those old reviews are rough. But they were the first books after years of not enjoying reading that I really loved and I’m so excited to see more of the world.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
A trans boy determined to prove his gender to his conservative Latinx family summons a ghost who refuses to leave in Aiden Thomas’s paranormal YA debut Cemetery Boys.
This has a trans main character, a gay romance, and ghosts. That could literally be a list of things I want to read more of in 2020, so June has never seemed to far away!9th June

I normally pop up my Christmas list on December 1st but since I was in Mexico, there’s been a little delay! I really enjoy looking back at my old lists (2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) and I love reading other peoples. It’s so interesting to see the different things that different people want, and get ideas from them for what I’m going to get my friends and family.
I’m a big podcast person and some of my favourites have some really great merchandise. Like the My Favourite Murder ‘Toxic Masculinity Ruins the Party Again’ mug, an ‘All Hail the Glow Cloud’ pin from my favourite episode of Welcome to Night Vale, and a Vermilion Minotaur pin from Hello from the Magic Tavern. You can never have enough mugs or pins, right?
I tend to ask for a DVD box-set of Christmas of something that’s older because they’re generally not on Netflix and are super expensive to buy digitally, so over the years I’ve received absolute gems like Frasier, Monk and Home Improvement. This year I have my eye on Golden Girls. A true classic!
I’ve never put books on my Christmas list while I’ve been book blogging because it would make for a very long list, but I was looking for a hardcover copy of Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome over Summer and found that The Folio Society has a truly beautiful copy. And I’m a sucker for having nice copies of my favourites.
This year is the year that I’ve started fostering kittens and while the charity I volunteer for is great at providing everything you need, I keep a list of things I think will make the kittens as comfortable as possible at a pretty traumatic time. Things like a Snuggle Kitty, a heating pad, various scratching toys, and plastic toys that keep them entertained while being easy to sanitize between litters. I also really want some new kittens to foster over the season to banish those holiday blues by feeling helpful so if Santa could hook me up, I’d love that.
What’s on your Christmas list this year?
This morning, I woke up with my Christmassy powers returned. Then I remembered that for the first time in three years, I hadn’t written my Christmas list post in advance. It’s not that I forgot, just that I have literally no idea what to add. This that definitely been a theme in past years. In 2013 there were 14 things on my list. In 2014, there were 10 on the list. Last year, we were down to 5. And now…
I’m torn between Pokémon Sun
and Pokémon Moon
. On one hand, Pokémon Sun has a feline legendary. On the other, Pokémon Moon follows the trend of me having the blue toned games, and I’m not a fan of the actual sun. But kitty. I can’t decide on which but I do know I want to add this game to my collection.
Is it one of my Christmas lists without a pair of Snooki Slippers? I can only find this pair on US Amazon but I just love the blue leopard print. I just love Snooki really!
And is it Christmas without a boxset? As a kid I remember my older cousin getting Friends DVDs every year and now I just love growing my 90’s TV collection. This year it’s between Home Improvement and Golden Girls! I only want one because both might be too much TV- even for me. So if you have a preference, please tell me.
And that’s it really! My current method of dealing with my hoarding tendencies is to just not bring in more things so yeah. Keeping it low-key.
What’s on your Christmas list?
It’s that time of year again. December 1st when I put up my Christmas list for your perusal. You can see my post from 2013 here! And my 2014 post here! I kept it pretty low-key this year, I’m really not feeling stuff. I think moving everything out of my room has really clued me into how much I have and I don’t feel like I need much that can be bought.
One thing I do need desperately though, is new gym gear. I go to the gym three times a week but I have almost no gym clothes, and my trainer is always telling me to get some. So I had a look and obviously being the massive Captain America fan, I need this compression shirt! And maybe some SHEILD yoga pants to match.
Every Christmas I ask for the same things. The first being Whittards Instant Tea. Unfortunately, they’ve stopped making one of my favourites! Blackcurrant and Elderflower is no more. So this year I only want a tub of Cranberry and Raspberry. The second being a pair of Snooki Slippers. I have three pairs now and I adore them. I think the Blue Leopard pair needs to join the ranks. And, of course, a Toblerone. Apparently there are ones that are about a metre long. I’d eat it all.
And finally I’d quite like a new pet! Kinda. I want a Marima Moss Ball. After seeing this picture making the rounds on Tumblr I decided that I would really like one of these in my life. I love the idea of having something small that slowly grows as I do. Especially since I kill most plants, and this is low-maintenance.
What’s on your Christmas list?
For me, the hardest people to buy presents for are bookworms. I know they like books. I know what kinds of books they like. But I know what kinds of books they like because they already have those books so unless I’m told explicitly “I want this book by this author,” then I have to think a little outside the box. These are the five gifts for bookworms I’ve found!
Last year I got my dad the Bookrest Lamp (£36.99) from I Want One of Those and he loves it. He says it’s the best gift I’ve ever got him (no pressure for this year eh?). This lamp is house shaped and is designed for the bookworm to rest their book on, while saving their page. I honestly think I’m going to buy one of these for myself one year.
If your bookworm is also a camper, or likes to read in the great outdoors then this Fully Booked Tent is so cute! It’s a bit pricey (£189.99) but I couldn’t not show it. It fits two, has the cover of The Natural World and opens at the pages.
Another gift idea is the Spineless Classics posters (£24.99-£44.00) that use the words from the book in the shape of instantly recognisably imagery from the story. They have a wide variety of books to chose from; The Great Gatsby, Alice in Wonderland, James and the Giant Peach, Pride and Prejudice, Trainspotting, Wuthering Heights and Life of Pi. And there are a couple more on Amazon if none of those take your fancy too. Personally I think these are so classy and prefect for if you know they like a book enough to want it up on their wall.
I couldn’t do a gift idea post without mentioning a subscription service. I think they’re such a lovely gift because they continue on for a couple of months and give the receiver something to look forward to in the bleak new year. And the one I love is Prudence and the Crow, a vintage book subscription box at £12 a month that offers 1, 3, 6 and 12 month subscriptions. I got a 3 month subscription for my mum for her birthday this year and she was really excited every month when it popped through the letterbox. Each package comes beautifully wrapped with a vintage paperback and a few extras.
Lastly, another thing something my dad and I both have is the Moleskine Book Journal (£12.59) for keeping track of what we’ve read and what we thought of it but while looking for this, I found this Book Lover’s Journal that seems pretty neat too and is a little bit less expensive (£10.06). Book Journals are so handy to have for readers that maybe don’t have Goodreads or maybe just like writing things down! I use mine for recording quotes and amazing writing I find as I read.
What do you get for the bookworms in your life?
I did a Christmas Wishlist last year for Blogmas Day 1 that you can check out here and I thought I’d do another one this year on the same day! It’s nice to have traditions. I have an Amazon wishlist like everybody else but these are the not-books in my letter to Santa. It’s a pretty short list since I don’t really need anything but it’s fun to do.
Much like last year I’m asking ol’ Santa Clause for another pair of Snooki Slippers, they’re my one thing where I know they’re a little overpriced but I want them anyway. And this year I have my eye on the Green Zebra print and the Blue Leopard print (both of which are on sale right now!)
Another thing I’m asking that I asked for last year are the Whittard Teas because they just taste so good! To drink said tea, I’d love a Night Vale mug! Be it the classic Night Vale Community Radio one or the new Moonlite All-Nite Diner one! I love this podcast, I’ve talked about it before here and here and I love mugs!
A Loot Crate subscription is also on the list. I love Loot Crate, I’ve done a couple reviews on the blog and I love it but I just don’t have the income to have £18 a month coming out of my bank account. Although I may have just ordered Decembers box because it looks neat. Loot Crate is like Christmas once a month anyway!
And of course a Toblerone, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a Toblerone. Something I also need desperately is a new head for my Clarisonic and I found this Delicate Brush Head Twin Pack on Amazon that is perfect!
New releases Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Pokémon Omega Ruby both look neat too. I have Pokémon X and really enjoy it and I’m looking forward to seeing what is coming next from the Pokémon world. I still have to finish Yellow for my 30 before 30 but this is good practice! Or should I wait until I complete X?
And finally a calendar, I have my eye on this Walking Dead one for my month by month and I also saw a German phrase-a-day one at my local garden centre that I think would be neat as I try and up my language skills! I’ve also been looking at this Q&A a Day: 5 Year Journal for a while and I think it would be cool as I love looking back on how things change over the years!
