Loot Crate: April 2015: Fantasy!

This months Loot Crate theme was Fantasy and despite being a fan of fantasy books and TV shows, it really wasn’t my favourite. It’s getting a bit annoying considering that last months crate was my favourite so far. It seems like every time there’s a good crate, my loyalty gets tested the month after. There was enough good in this one to equal out the disappointing though.

Unboxing Loot Crate: April 2015: Fantasy

Bit of an ‘eh’ box to me!

Loot Crate unboxing Dungeon & Dragons shirt bowtie

I don’t personally play Dungeons & Dragons although I really really want to. A buddy of mine and I are trying to sort something out but we’re total newbs. At least I will look the part with this new t-shirt!
Again with the slightly gendered products. I’m sure some ladies will get use out of this bowtie but it’s just something that is definitely aimed at men. Loot Crate could put in some nerdy nail polish or makeup and it would be the same, one gender would get more use out of it than the other. And that just isn’t really something I’m a fan of.

Harry Potter luggage tags Loot Crate

It’s probably a little bit embarrassing how long I spent wearing this crown after inflating it. Just walking around my house wearing a crown. I kind of need one of my friends of have a fancy dress party so I can wear this outside!

It’s also pretty embarrassing that I’ve never seen The Princess Bride. I know, I know- I need too. But a pack of cards is always welcome in my house where cards disappear of the regular.
My favourite item in this months Loot Crate and the one that makes it kind of worth it is this Platform 9 3/4 luggage tag that I’ve already filled out with my address and attached to my suitcase. It’s really sturdy and just the thing I needed to separate my suitcase from the rest when I go travelling. Unless I mix up my bag with another Looter!

Game of Thrones magnets Stark USB

With the theme; Fantasy, it was pretty obvious that Game of Thrones was going to make an appearance. And it did! Twice. The magnets are pretty basic and useless for someone like me that doesn’t have a magnetic fridge. But the Stark Sigil USB, oh the Stark Sigil 4GB USB. Firstly, it’s so awesome and useful. I’ve already backed up all of my documents onto it. But also, to get to the USB you have to take the head off. Too soon. Too soon.

Magazine badge Fantasy Loot Crate

And the usual magazine and badge! Yeah, it was a bit of a disappointing crate for me. But the crown and USB are definitely getting some use daily. Next month is ‘Unite’ so I’m hopeful. Want to sign up to Loot Crate? You can do so here!

Loot Crate: March 2015: Covert!

I’m going on the record here, note it down, this Covert crate is my favourite Loot Crate since Heroes. I know I said last months Play theme was my favourite since Fear but Heroes was always my most favourite so I’m pretty impressed with this months Loot Crate. To say the least. It may even knock Heroes off the number one spot!

So many cool things!

First thing I pulled out was this sad James Bond ‘This Is Stirred’ shirt. How cute is this? I mean c’mon. I’m not a big James Bond fan but even I would wear this. The art is by JSalvador who does the Super Emo Friends and did the Walking Dead art from the Fear crate. As always the Loot Crate shirts are nice enough quality, if a little thin.

This Paracord Survival Bracelet is actually so cool, it’s made from military-grade parachute cord and can be used for all sorts of things! Like a tourniquet, making a trap, or fishing. I’m not a survival nut by any means but I have watched Lost enough times to know that this is getting strapped to my hand luggage next time I go on a plane.

I’m really excited to see the Orphan Black #1 comic book. I love the Orphan Black show so I’m looking forward to see what happens in the comic books. I do think the picture on the cover could be a way better resolution- am I nitpicking? I think I am. But either way, Orphan Black is a must watch if you haven’t already.

Notebooks are always welcome in my house. I go through notebooks like most people go through food and water and these Field Notes are no exception. I just wish they didn’t have a ’48-Page Memo Book’ bit on the front (under the classified tape), it kind of ruins the look for me. But ah well! One is squared and one is lined and I’m excited to put them to use.

Confession. I’ve never played Mad Libs, I feel that was definitely more of an American game than a British game but I remember it from an episode of Friends so I’m going to play a game with a buddy of mine who is obsessed with Friends. Especially these Mad Libs that are spy themed, I think that’ll be pretty funny.

I’m not a watch person but even I have to admit that this stealthy Blink Time watch from 50 Fifty Gifts (who have so many cool things on their website, I’m in love) is pretty awesome. It has a button that you press and the time appears for about 5 seconds before disappearing. I feel like Phil Coulson, even though he has a very fancy silver watch.

Speaking of Phil Coulson, I am totally going to cosplay as Fem!Coulson now I have an official prop replica of a S.H.I.E.L.D lanyard. I found that bit hilarious on the show so I actually squealed when I found this. Literally my favourite thing Loot Crate has ever sent me.

And the usual magazine, badge and this months digital loot; Nijack #1 on Comixology. Pretty amazing crate, huh? If you want to sign up to Loot Crate you can do so here!

Loot Crate: February 2015: Play!

This months Loot Crate is my favourite since Fear, I actually squealed at some of the things when I opened the box. The theme was play and while I was expecting a bunch of things I didn’t quite get, I’m not much of a video game player bar Pokémon and Animal Crossing, they really went in another direction that was really inclusive. Well played, Loot Crate, well played. So let’s have a look!

Can you see why I like it so much?

Ready Player One! Yes! This box came with a copy of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, a book that has been adored by a lot of book bloggers and vloggers and has been on my Amazon wish list for months. It’s set in 2044 and has the main character taking part in a video game challenge, I’ve been dying to read this so I’m really excited that this came in my Loot Crate. The only book I have similar is the Doctor Who novel; Winner Takes All which I loved so I have high hopes.

I’ve never played Superfight before but after reading up about it and noticing it’s similarity to Cards Against Humanity, I’m already planning a game night with some friends. “Create hilarious fighters with these cards, then argue over who would win a fight between them.” Awesome. I can’t wait to play even if I lose like I always do when I play games with my friends.

Next thing I noticed was the Mini Munny, I’m possibly the least artistic person in existence- my strengths are words and occasionally clay but I’m sure I’ll find a buddy who will happily take this lil’ guy off my hands and do something amazing with the wipe-off markers it came with. A seriously adorable idea.

Next is this Hexbug Ant that has sensors at the back and front so it changes direction if it bumps into something. I just instagrammed a video of it in action. I wasn’t too sure about this when it came but now it’s my new best friend and I just find it really funny! I love insects. And it’s my favourite colour so what’s a girl to do?!

The rock-paper-scissors dice are a little confusing because rock-paper-scissors is literally the game that never needs dice but to each their own.

The poster this month was this Pac Man cartridge design by Manny Peters, who you can find here! This is a really beautiful and clever print, I may even frame this one. He also has a Link version that may just have to be a birthday gift for someone I know.

And the usual magazine and badge! The digital Loot this month is for the Firefly game and you can bet I’m all over that, Brownouts forever. Since the box unfolds into a board game too, instructions and  pop-out counters came too. Who can pack the Loot the fastest? The box designs are just amazing lately.

I’m really impressed with this Loot Crate, especially after the disappointing January box. Just when I thought I was out, Loot Crate has pulled me back in again. I would’ve been so annoyed if I missed out on this box.

Loot Crate: January 2015: Rewind!

It’s finally happened, I didn’t like last months Loot Crate. When it finally arrived and I got it all out to look I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. The theme; Rewind, had so much potential and so many options to go with but the result was a pretty boring box with only one thing I liked.

So lets take a closer look!

The big ticket item this month was a Star Wars #1 Comic Book which is cool and all but I’m not much of a Star Wars fan. They were also tweeting about this loads before the box was even sent out, spoiler alert!
And it also came with a comic book notebook which, again, is cool but not my thing and I’m not sure how it matches the theme either…

Next is a shirt with a blueprint of Voltron, a cartoon from the 80’s that I had to ask my friend about because it was before my time and really not my thing. I was a Thunderbirds kid. It’s a neat shirt but I don’t like wearing random references I don’t understand.
And a game cartridge model- again, from before my time. I grew up in the age of gameboys and still have a little collection. If this had been a model of Pokémon Yellow, I would have been all over that.

The month before this came with a wallet, and this month a tie. I’m not saying that ladies can’t use wallets or wear ties, several have been instagraming some neat alternative ways to wear this, but I can’t help but think Loot Crate are letting their gender assumptions show. This’ll be going to my brother if he wants it.

The one thing I liked from this months Loot Crate was these sunglasses. They come with UV protection and you can bet these are going in my suitcase for my trip to Vegas. They don’t carry the rest of the box though.

And the usual magazine and badge. No digital Loot this month although the box does fold up into an NES. Like I said, it’s not my favourite box, it felt kind of oddly put together so I’m hoping that this months ‘Play’ box blows this one out of the water.

Loot Crate: December 2014: Anniversary!

The ones of you that are more aware than I am and aren’t still confused by what year it is will notice that it is not December, or even 2014 anymore, but my Loot Crate was super super late this month and only just arrived. I understand though because shipping around the holidays sucks.

The theme was Anniversary as lots of things celebrated birthdays this year- Simpsons celebrated it’s 25th year on air. That show is older than I am. And I know I said repeatedly that I was cancelling Loot Crate to save money but they drew me in with ann exclusive Funko Pop! They do know my weak spots!

Let’s start with the DC items of the box. First up being Batman #36 written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Greg Capullo- the dream team of comics. When the New 52 started I didn’t pick up Batman and I regret it so I’m hoping to jump on with this one!

And the exclusive Funko Pop… The Joker Batman-Batman. Honestly can’t say I’m a huge fan of this one but I see what they did and it’s cute enough!

Onto Marvel! The first thing I saw was baby Groot socks. These will be joining my Deadpool socks, also from Loot Crate, as my favourites in my sock draw. So dang cute. Anything Guardians of the Galaxy immediately gets my love.

And it also came with a Captain America Vanilla Air Freshener. I wish I had a car right about now because I love Cap and this would brighten up any car interior.

The Ghostbusters door hanger kind of reminds me of something I had when I was a kid and whereas my privacy is pretty well respected, I have a friend who could do with this to keep little brothers out.
The Simpsons was a pretty good choice for a design with the Dynomighty Mighty Wallet. I had lot of fun when I first picked it out of the box trying to find my favourites. I was actually sent two of these in my box for some reason.

The Tetris Sticker Set has been retweeted a lot by Loot Crates twitter- people are coming up with some really clever patterns. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with these stickers but they’re so cool I’m sure I’ll find something.

The digital loot this month was a month free over at Crunchyroll, what looks like the Anime version of Manga. A Mini Candy Cane which I just finished and the usual badge and magazine (again there were two of these). Overall, it wasn’t my favourite Loot Crate but there were some gems.

I’m doing a little blog survey to see what I can improve in the new year, I’d love it if you could take a couple minutes to fill it in here!

Loot Crate: October 2014: Fear!

Of all the Loot Crate’s that I have bought this year, this was the one I was most excited for and probably the one I was most pleased with! October’s theme was Fear and although I’m not one for horror movies, I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead and zombies so this crate was perfect for me!

A very full box!

I’ll start with The Walking Dead things since they were what I was immediately drawn to and the reason I didn’t cancel my box last month. It came with this adorable/heartbreaking artwork of Merle and Daryl from back in season 3 which made me exclaim “Oh no!” when I saw it. I love it. I’m going to frame it :’)
And it came with a Loot Crate Exclusive #132 of The Walking Dead comic. I tend to read The Walking Dead comics in the hardcover form but I have a few important issues here and there and this can join them!

I’ll admit, when I first saw this Dead Rising 3 weapon I was a little confused why it was loose but it turns out that it’s a pen! As a Creative Writing student, I do a hell of a lot of writing so I think this is going to get quite a bit of use. I must remember not to take it to the bank though!
And one of my favourite things in this box was the book; How to Survive a Sharknado. I’ve flicked through it and you can expect a review soon because I love books like this. Admittedly the ones I have are more relevant to everyday life but you never know when Mothman is going to invade your town!

As a lazy halloweener, these temporary tattoos just sorted out my costume for this year. I’m thinking werewolf victim! I can’t wait to have a bit of a play around with these and some fake blood. I’m sure I’ll be instagraming my attempts at this too!
There was a lot of chat on twitter about Loot Crate doing tshirts again, at least in this box and it didn’t disappoint. I’m not a huge skull wearing person but this Super 7 shirt has cats on it and I love cats!

And of course it came with the monthly magazine- 3D cover and all this month, and a badge. I don’t play the game Smite, and the digital bonus is a Jack the Reaper skin so I’ll be passing this on to a friend but the Toxic Waste sweet? Keeping that all to myself. I loved them as a kid. I would get in challenges with my friends over who could keep it in their mouth the longest and eventually learned how to win. I also got an Official Member card which is apparently for showing you’re a looter at cons for free swag. Unfortunately I don’t think they come to UK cons but it’s going in my purse next to my local comic book store loyalty card anyway.

So, pretty neat box! Unfortunately as I mentioned in my last My Geek Box unboxing, I am unsubscribing from these monthly boxes as they’re quite a drain on my bank account so unless next months theme is ‘Everything Imogen Wants Ever’, Loot Crate and I are taking a break *sobs*. Want to sign up? You can do so here!

Loot Crate: September 2014: Galactic!

While I would easily say I am a Sci-Fi fan, I admit to never watching Star Trek or any of the Alien films. I’m not even much of a Star Wars anymore although I was as a kid. Firefly, Defiance, Doctor Who, those are my types of Sci-Fi. I’m a TV watcher more than a movie watcher. This Loot Crate had some great things, if you were a fan of the source material.

Such a full box!

Much like last month when Loot Crate and My Geek Box both had a Funko Pop!, this month they both had a Funko Mystery Mini. My Geek Box gave me a walker from The Walking Dead and Loot Crate gave me this exclusive Malcolm Reynolds figure to keep an eye on him! I love this. It’s so cute and Firefly is one of my favourite TV shows which I spoke about here! If you haven’t watched it, I promise you won’t regret it.
Another Firefly item was the 10,000 credit. It’s actually pretty neat and I kind of want a safe just to have this in there but I don’t so I have no idea what to do with this yet! Any ideas?

Pretty much everyone who has a Tumblr has seen the gifs of the Star Trek Tribbles so despite never watching the show, I know what they are and I love this. It’s super soft and well made.
As well as this in the- I know kind of what it is but not really category- was an Alien action figure of Alien, or does it have a proper name? I really have no opinion on this except it’s kind of gross :’) Time watch the movies.

Next was this neat Hans Solo poster, I’m not a poster person but this one is so cool- I think I have to find a place for it or find someone with a free wall.
And this Star Wars/ retro games magnet makes me need a proper fridge! I have a wooden covered one so have nothing to stick this too yet. Boy, you’re lucky you have these compartments!

And the little add-ons that make this box so great; the usual magazine and badge, digital loot of the Halo comic and Pop Rocks! I’d never had Pop Rocks before but they were- interesting.

So this Loot Crate was an up and down one for me, and I was going to cancel like I canceled My Geek Box because of money saving but- next month is ‘Fear’ month and I’m just predicting some cool The Walking Dead stuff from this sneak. Want to sign up? You can do so here!

Loot Crate Vs. My Geek Box: Heroes Vs. Quests: August!

Today I’m comparing two nerdy subscription boxes for you. The popular Loot Crate and the newer UK My Geek Box. Loot Crate did ‘Villains’ last month and came back with ‘Heroes’ this month, and My Geek Box had the theme of ‘Quests’.

Two boxes of greatness.

Firstly, this months Loot Crate. I was so excited about this with the massive hype surrounding the Loot Crate exclusive Funko. Unfortunately my Loot Crate was majorly delayed and they had to send out another one but it came today and I was thrilled. Mainly because of the exclusive Funko everyone was raving about for the entire month.

HELLO GROOT. This thing is freaking adorable! Really nicely made and a welcome addition to my desk- I also really want the Baby Groot bobble head which is coming out in December too. How many Groots are too many?
Then came the Shwings which I’m currently deciding which pair of shoes I want to put on. You just have to thread these into your laces and you’re ready to walk super fast!
Confession; I’m not a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, never really got into it so the Leonardo figure and sunglasses went right over my head. I’ll probably pass them on to a friend but I can see them being really exciting to someone who knows the franchise!
This Sonic the Hedgehog air freshener from Epic Scents is so cute, I wish I had a car to put it in! And this magnet needs a home ASAP. And as always it came with the monthly badge and magazine, as well as digital loot for free/discounted games.

So this was actually my first My Geek Box as I was looking around for a UK alternative that might be a little cheaper. I think My Geek Box is going to do great things, I’m looking forward to the next box (Theme: Apocalypse) and I think it’s great to support a UK company. But they don’t have the same pull over the industry yet like Loot Crate does. I’ll be interested to see where they go!

It came with; a Hodor Funko Pop! I’ve seen that people got different ones from Game of Thrones and if I’m honest, Hodor isn’t my favourite but hey. And in keeping with the Game of Thrones theme, a Greyjoy bookmark. Again, if I had to pick one house in GoT I disliked the most it would be the Greyjoys but that’s the risk you take with these boxes.
Next is a Lord of the Rings/ Reservoir Dogs mash-up t-shirt. I’ve never watched Reservoir Dogs but I have a buddy who would love this. And in keeping with the Tolkien theme, 4 The Hobbit postcards. This felt a little cheap, I’ll admit. And lastly some Harry Potter Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans. These are disgusting :’) I have terrible luck and keep picking out grass ones!
Overall the whole box was a little hit and miss for me, I would’ve liked it a lot more if the Funko Pop! was a character I liked and the bookmark was a house I liked but hey.

Another thing to consider is the marketing that both companies do. It’s a little confusing so bear with me. Loot Crate spend a month talking about the upcoming box, people have up until the day before they get sent out to subscribe, the box gets sent out then they start talking about the next box! Whereas with My Geek Box you have until the 31st of the month before to sign up, they’re send out on the 15th but start talking about the next box on the 1st of the same month. So there was little hype about the Quest box for the 15 days before it came.

Want to sign up? My Geek Box is £16.99 a month and Loot Crate is £18.36 a month plus £1.25 as a ‘non-sterling purchase fee’ if you’re with Santander weirdly but they generally have 10% off for new subscribers! Both have discounted prices if you go for 3 or 6 month plans. If you- like me- are pretty much just interested in the Funko Pops! then you might want to pop over here where if you buy 2, you get 10% off!

What do you think of these two?

Loot Crate: July 2014: Villains

I’ve wanted a Loot Crate for a while after seeing my boo Ashley’s posts about them and a couple of weeks ago in a tired haze of wanting to spend some money, I ordered one. It dropped through my letter box a couple of days after the Americans got theirs and I ripped it open after excitedly instagraming that it had arrived. July’s theme was Villains and I wasn’t sure really what to expect! My idea of a villain is Gary *growls* but I was pleasantly surprised.

The first thing I pulled out was the Joker/Loki/Joki shirt which made me laugh, it’s one hell of a combination. I think those two would make quite a team. I wore it to the gym yesterday and it was comfortable to wear even when doing the most uncomfortable of exercises!
The other clothing item was these fancy Deadpool socks, I don’t know much about Marvel but I’ve seen enough Deadpool cosplays to do my research and these are great, if a bit tight, (I’m wearing them right now) and better than boring black socks!

I’m not a big poster person so I’m going to pass these on but Harley Quinn is one of my faves. She’s joined by the Joker and I’m sure my friend is going to appreciate having that staring at her from the wall.
Another DC item is the Necessary Evil DVD documentary looking into The Joker, Lex Luther, Catwoman, Doomsday and Bane. I’ve not had a chance to watch this yet but I love documentaries so I’m pretty excited.

The smaller more ‘nik nak’ items were this cute little Darth Vader key chain who is currently hanging on my keys with a small sombrero and a Bowser/ Uncle Sam mash-up magnet. I don’t have a magnetic fridge but I’m determined to find something to stick this too!

My favourite thing this month and probably the reason I snapped and subscribed was the Loot Crate variant edition #1 of Rocket Racoon. I’m a big comic book nerd but I tend to lean towards DC and Image so this is my first ever Marvel comic book bar what I’ve picked up on Free Comic Book Day. I saw Guardians of the Galaxy on Monday and my mind has been changed (amazing movie, go see it). I want all the Marvel and I think I’m going to add Rocket Racoon to my pull list, I’ve read this and since #2 is out today- a trip to my LCS might be in order!
And it came with the usual pin (so cute) and Loot Crate magazine that has interviews and puzzles and all sorts that are fun to flick through.

The box was also great :’)
Overall I really liked this box and I’m excited for next month with the Heroes theme! Which comes with an exclusive Funko figure! These boxes cost £16.18 for all those in the UK and I was charged a £1.25 ‘non-sterling fee’ by my bank but I’d say it’s 100% worth the money.
If you want to sign up all you have to do is go here with my super special link and you can get 10% off with the code ‘Heroes’. And I have a special comparison post for you UK nerds coming too 😉
