You may know by now, since I’ve been whining about it for about a month, that I’m in a reading slump. When I was in a bit of a blogging slump I wrote my 5 Things I Love about Blogging and it helped me centre myself a little so I’m hoping that this will do the same for my reading! Because reading is awesome. So here are 5 things I love about reading…
Reading is fun. You open a book and suddenly you’re on an adventure. You’re on Mars or in Paris, you’re magical or undead, in somebody else’s head or cheering them on from the sidelines. It’s like a movie in your head where you’re the director, caster and costume designer. It’s an escape from whatever boring, or uncomfortable, or horrible situation you’re in. And maybe when you finish, you can see your situation in a new way too.
I read mainly fiction, and by that I mean that I’ve read two non-fiction books in the past year and a half. But I still feel like I’ve learnt a lot. Not facts or statistics, but new jokes (What do you call a French man in sandals? Phillipe Phillope!), new words (Consternation: a feeling of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected.) and new ways of looking at things that I hadn’t thought of before.
3. The Community!
I’m not just talking about the book blogging community, who share such excitement for books, even though I adore them all. But the bookstagram community too, who share such beautiful pictures about a hobby that is very word based. And booktubers who shout their love from the rooftops. We’re all very friendly people, I’ve found, and talking to us about books is a sure way to get us excited- although your bank balance may suffer, like mine, from all the recommendations.
4. There’s nothing comparable to curling up with a good book!
In the age of the internet, smart phones and TV, we still haven’t made anything that hits the spot like a good old paper and ink book. Bonus points for purring pets trying to get your attention, a roaring fire in the hearth and a cuppa tea. Incomparable.
5. An excuse to be a bit of a collector/ hoarder!
I have a bit of a hoarding problem. I admit it. But even though I have more books than I could probably read in the next ten years- I really don’t see the problem with it. It’s the possibility of all those stories, all the worlds behind those covers that is just so wonderful. So you’ll have to pry my books out of my cold dead hands. Although how I will hold them all is a mystery. My death may of been caused by all my books falling on me. No need to avenge me.
